My PocketPC links
Yes, I’m a proud owner of a Dell Axim X30 High, that my father bought me… And since I’ve spend hours and hours of searching for PocketPC software (the X30 comes with Windows Mobile 2003SE), I thought I could share the links of my favorite applications. Most of them are either open-source software or freeware.
System software
Batti: A really useful battery monitor. It shows how full is your battery above the taskbar. The best I found and is really light.
Dynamo: An animated task manager. Effects and usability, I use to graphically switch between running processes.
vBar: Although Dell ships its PDAs with a simple taskmanager called “Switcher”, I found this one extremely handy. And looks better
I used to have tMan, but it didn’t work OK in two programs.
SuperWaba: Java-like virtual machine and language. Useful if you want to write or run such programs.
PocketRAR: THE compression tool.
WiFi Tools
PocketWarrior (GPL): Find WiFi networks.
WiFiFoFum: Find WiFi networks.
Scientific Tools
Xpander: A very useful mathematics solving tool. Hey, I use it all the time (until I find a Matlab alternative).
Multimedia
The Core Pocket Multimedia Player: THE player for all kinds of movies. Can’t live without it
Games
ScummVm (GPL): play old LucasArts games (and more) on your PDA. If you have a nice, bright screen, good sound and fast processor, you can play games such as Beneath a Steel Sky and Day of the Tentacle. Just awesome!
Readers and Viewers
Adobe Acrobat Reader for PocketPC: I don’t think I should write anything else. Acrobat Reader for Windows Mobile. However, it is a bit heavy and requires a lot of space.
Mobipocket Reader: Now free, one of the best readers for e-books and other documents. In their site there is a big variety of e-books in very competitive price.
GPS and Maps
Google Maps for Mobile: Google Maps for mobile devices, also has very good GPS support. If only there were globe-wide WiFi connection.
